Two More Distributions

One hundred and forty school girls and their teachers at two schools in the villages of Churibot and Mudi in the west of Nepal, received our sanitary pad kits last week.

Partnering with the Gurkha Welfare Scheme, the distribution was overseen by Project Engineer, Sophie Piper and coincided with the opening of two of their new schools. Teaming up with the GWS has given us the opportunity to reach schools in very remote areas that WONDERWorks would otherwise find hard and expensive to access. Senior Social Worker Goma Gurung accompanied the team and spent time with the girls to discuss female hygiene, how to use the sanitary pads and how to care for them. She also took the time to speak to the mothers and fathers, ensuring support for their daughters as they go through puberty. She will continue to liaise with the schools and visit again in six months time.

The first school was Siddartha Secondary School in Churibot, where sixty kits were provided to girls (from eleven years up) and their teachers. The second school was Buddhi Bikas Secondary School (two hours of arduous walking from Churibot) where eighty school girls and their teachers also received the kits. Copies of ‘Menstrupedia Comic’ were provided to both schools to help with future health education classes.

We are very grateful to GWS, Sophie, Goma and the rest of the team for their hard work in ensuring the distribution was a success. We will be partnering with them again in February to carry out two more distributions – one in the far east and the other in the far west.
